Our Story
Discover our rich history. Atkinson’s history dates back to the 1700’s. What started as small grist mill on the banks of the Little River has grown into a beloved national brand found in countless kitchens. It all started, and continues with a commitment to quality cornmeal and customer service.
Modern Day
Since 1971, the Wheeler family, and hundreds of other incredible employees have grown Atkinson’s to a household name. Ray and Betty built their life and raised their six children (Glenn, born in 1958, Ben born in 1959, Tim 1961, Gary 1962, Cindy 1968, and Wendy 1969) down and around the old mill. Ray learned how to develop new products that allowed Atkinson’s to transition from just a corn-grinding grist mill, into a modern food production company. Out of those developments came the Sweet Betsy Hushpuppy mix, an industry favorite. Chicken and Seafood Breaders, Biscuit Mixes, and many other popular dry grocery mixes were to follow.
Through the 1980’s, Atkinson’s would continue to build new warehouses and grain bins to accommodate the growing brand. Atkinson’s products became standard in local restaurants and grocery stores. The introduction of premade-frozen items like Hushpuppies and Pastry (dumpling) strips showcased Atkinson’s ability to adapt to customers needs and provide new and innovative products.
During the 1990’s Atkinson’s continued to expand both on its campus, but also in the wholesale restaurant industry. Partnering with the major distributors allowed Atkinson’s products to be enjoyed all across, and outside of North Carolina. Notable events in the 1990’s include Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Floyd in 1999. These setbacks eventually helped Atkinson’s to begin transitioning daily operations away from the banks of the Little River.
Through the 2000’s, the business has continued to grow. Ray and Betty’s 3rd son Tim passed away from cancer in 2013. He was beloved by his family, coworkers, and Atkinson’s customers.
Atkinson’s continues to operate and grow under the Wheeler family, and many longtime and loyal employees. A lot has changed since Ray and Betty Wheeler arrived in 1958, but the dedication to produce fair priced food products at the highest quality hasn’t.
